  1. Adequate for medium-duty jobs. I bought this to remove 3 dwarf spruce trees from my front yard. The trees were about 5ft tall with a stump diameter of about 5″. Not huge, but not shrubs. I cut down the body of the tree with a bow saw, leaving the exposed stumps. This was the first time I ever removed tree stumps like this, so I’m perfectly fine accepting some responsibility for user error resulting in the failure of the tool. However, the video demonstrating its sawing ability is very optimistic. It does work well for small roots up to about 0.5″ dia. but anything over that will be a bit of a struggle. You aren’t going to get through it easily. I would recommend having a limb lopper for larger roots to save time/effort.Toward the end of digging up the second tree, the handle bent. I flipped over the shovel to bend it back. It worked okay, but I think that was the beginning of the end. I was ALMOST finished with the third tree when it finally failed. I’m grateful it held out for me. It took me 20-30 minutes to dig up each tree. All in all, it was serviceable. If you have some smaller shrubs or grasses, or additional tools to assist with larger jobs, this will do the trick. But if you have a larger job, you might want to buy 2 of these just in case.

  2. Just got this today. This was just delivered today, and it’s 96 degrees with a 120 heat factor, so I haven’t taken it for a test drive yet. First impression is that it’d a good design, made of heavy duty materials, and well-built. I have rocky soil and plenty of tree roots to cut through AND I have a new pawpaw tree coming from a nursery next week. I’ll update my review after that’s planted.Update: I haven’t received the tree yet but I did dig up this hyacinth to move it. It was in rocky soil with plenty of sassafras roots around it. I dug about a 16in circle around it to full depth and pried it out of the ground with the Root Assassin. It worked great. I’m really pleased with the tool.

  3. Narrow blade head gets into small places. This product fits my hands and is easy to use. I was able to clean out weeds in garden in short length of time and even get into narrow crevices. I highly recommend this tool for your garden collection.

  4. Name is perfect. I reclaimed a garden overtaken by lily of the valley. After trying many other things I ordered this tool ,it worked perfectly. Worth every penny.

  5. Great for detecting. I use this for metal detecting makes easy work of hard to dig holes.

  6. My little friend–professional horticulturist’s review. I am a professional horticulturist and use the Root Slayer brand almost exclusively for digging. The 32″ assassin shovel is particularly useful when planting quart, pint, and trayed plants. I’ve used a hori hori in the past and it doesn’t dig quite as large an opening using a similar amount of energy and time, especially if the soil is rocky, compacted, or not ideal in any way (and you use both arms and shoulders to dig, not just triceps). The one disadvantage to root slayers: irrigation and electrical line. These shovels are merciless, so I carry wire nuts, 710 repair parts, and micro-tubing with attachments in my truck at all times. They can also damage PVC easily. My customers have now all bought root slayer shovels after I let them borrow mine.If you’re a gardener and you don’t have one of these, you’re really missing out.

  7. Works great. I have soooo many things to dig up since I’m redoing my plantings and I was having the hardest time with roots. This has helped tremendously. But it is heavy but very sturdy. I have 4 o’clocks that I’m trying to dig up after having them for about 20 years. So needless to say, the tubers these things grow underground can be HUGE! And a hand trowel of any sort does nothing but make my arm and hand hurt when trying to get these out of the ground. But the root assassin is pointed too & I’m only going after the tubers and not other items around them that I want to actually keep. I really do recommend this as an added tool for your gardening if you have some tough rooted items to get rid of.

  8. It’s worth of a 4.5, but I rounded up to 5 because it does EVERYTHING they claim. This is a great little shovel. I dug out at least 3-5 times as many little trees and weeds as I could with a comparable digging shovel. This thing chews through the roots and cuts vines with very little effort. My only concern is that if you’re really reefing on the shovel, the red plastic handle is the weak point. Don’t push pull on it to the point of failure… stand on the metal shaft or the blade itself for additional leverage. My handle is already showing a white line where the handle meets the metal shaft because I was standing on it to lift a couple large tree roots before cutting them. No breakage, but just a sign of being pushed too far by an impatient homeowner. 😆

  9. not exactly what I expected. Not exactly what my wife the gardener was expecting but, it does the job and she uses it quite frequently. Glad we bought it and would not send it back.

  10. Works as advertised – best tool ever. This is easy to use and makes quick work of clearing overgrown volunteer bushes or small trees.

  11. Amazing garden tool. I have been having a problem with spiderwort taking over my garden, it has a large invasive root system. This tool has been so helpful in getting this invasive plant out of my garden. It has a sharp point and i am able to pinpoint exactly where i need to insert it in the ground without damaging nearby plants. I’m short, so the size is perfect for me. Be certain that the garden has been softened up before using. We have clay soil where i live.

  12. Works great for a variety of things. I’m 5’6″ and the handle on this product hits me right at my waste which is perfect for getting power into the dirt and roots. *We have had a lot of rain, so soil is soft* But the teeth on each side along with the head was impressiveWhen I first broke dirt with this I wasn’t expecting the response. It TORE right through the dirt and demolished smaller roots around the root I was going after. The bigger root was over 1″ thick and is an actual vine that are a bit harder to get a bite on. I was able to easily get it pulled out in a matter of minutes.I’m really impressed at the way this thing just tore through the dirt, rock and made it easy to lift the entirely of the root/vine in one go. I was then able to just lob off what was pulled up with some pruners.Highly recommend this line. They have SEVERAL different sizes and types to choose from, so make sure to check them out.

  13. A must have for prickly weeds and deep tap roots. Bought this to remove invasive must thistle from our property. It tears through the soil easily allowing you to get the full root out of the ground intact. The tool is heavy duty, but still light weight. I especially like the longer handle which allows me to do less bending. The cutting edge of the shovel goes through soil, grasses, and even rocky areas with ease. Would absolutely recommend to anyone who regularly gardens, plants trees, has roots with deep tap roots to manage, or for digging up anything that has a tendency to leave thorns, needs or prickles when touched.

  14. Best ever shovel for transplanting or digging new holes. Love the size ( length) as it’s easy to manage. The blade cuts right through the small roots from previous plantings etc so you don’t have to keep clipping them with your clippers I love this shovel!

  15. Awesome tool. Oh gosh, I don’t know where to start on the positives of this shovel. It cuts right through roots and doesn’t require a 200 pound man to use it. I would tackle anyone who tried to take it from me, unless they wanted to work my flower beds. It’s a great tool and will make your garden work so much easier.
