  1. If they’re good enough for Hickok 45, I figured they would work for me. They do a surprisingly good job of sound isolation, but do conduct a distracting amount of noise when the band contacts clothing, rifle stocks, etc. They are very handy to take on and off, not bulky, and very light. They do not, in my experience, replace the need for plugs and muffs when shooting high power rifles or handguns, or being stationed next to a shooter with a muzzle brake (aka loudener). The price was good, and they fill a definite niche, especially in the dog days of summer, where they work well with hats and caps. I believe they will work well with power equipment also. The muffs and plugs will come out when the boomers are in use, but these will encourage protection when using less energetic devices. By buying the box of 10, the price is less than $4 and I will hand them out to my friends.

  2. Preferred choice. I can’t really think of much to say about ear protection other than to compare it to others I have used over the years. First of all, I’ve used to pricey noise cancelling / low profile options all the way down to standard muffs and small plugs including special plugs that let you hear but block loud noise. I keep going back to this style because of the lack of bulk, ease of use and overall small footprint to hit the rifle stock. They’re easy to put in and take out and stay readily available around your neck. I do get some transfer of noise when the plastic band rubs on my stock but it’s not a huge problem. The only problem I’ve ever had with this type is the plugs sometimes getting stuck in my ear when removing so have to refit the soft plug piece back onto the band, however, it has been rare and usually only occurs when I’ve put them in too snug.

  3. Howard Leight ear band works with a couple of querks. Used these at the outdoor rifle range today. Fit wise they are way better than standard electronic ear muffs which get in the way when you are sighting in an AR. Std ear muffs don’t allow you to rest your cheek on the rifle stock as they are too bulky. These are flat to the head & don’t disrupt your cheek to stock placement especially if you wear them around the back of your head like Hitcock 45 does. In fact if you check his website it states that he uses a Howard Leight ear muffs band. They have pretty much good sound surpression but they fit too tight in your ear & are a little uncomfortable. The orange tips also come off of the band when you try to remove them during a cease fire. The tips stay in your ear canal while the band comes completely off. You then have to remove the plugs from your ear and place them on the tip holders on the head band. Next time I’ll try using just the plugs without the head/neck band, they might work even better & not interfere with your cheek to stock contact.Overall it works pretty good dispite the negative querks. The price is right so I can’t complain there. Will have to try it at the indoor pistol range to see if it works there.

I love these, but. These keep the noise down really well for working in a shop, the ONLY thing I have against them (and I’m sure it’s my ears’ fault) is that for ME, after wearing them for a short time, the ear plugs kind of plunger their way into my ear canal a little bit, and when I try to remove them, the ear plugs come off of the plastic frame and I have to take my gloves off to remove them. Not a huge deal, but kind of frustrating that they don’t adhere to the frame better. The other thing I would mention – be cautious of the plastic frame. You can put it under your chin, behind your head, on top of your head…but if you have it behind your head or under your chin, it acts like a stethoscope, so you can hear the amplified sound of it brushing against your skin/clothing through the earplugs. Hence, I always wear it on top.

Updated 13 Jun 2020 to four stars. Noise cancellation unless you absolutely jam them into your ears. You can still hear yourself breathe and talk, but other people’s voices are diminished a bit. Got them for protecting my ears when vacuuming lint from the actual dryer vent (not the venting pipes). Heed the warning that tapping the headband can cause extremely loud noises in your ears. I will try wrapping my headband in fabric to reduce the headband noises.UPDATE: i read an explanation of the QB1 HYG (not the non-universal icons in the manual) and I had not been using them correctly. They are to be inserted far into your ear. With the subtraction of 1 star for the sound conduction through the plastic arms when touched or struck, I have pumped my raring to 4 stars. They block ALL of the high pitched screaming of the Vacuum’s crevice attachment as I clean the lint from my dryer.Good stuff.
