UPDATED: Good Small Cutter Mattock for the Price. PRE-REVIEW NOTE: I had originally posted a one star review for this product because it was much different than what was pictured on the website at the time – photos showed the mattock head locking to the very top of the handle, and another showed a full size mattock being swung over a guys head. After I posted the review, the seller contacted me and told me the photos were wrong and that he corrected them. When I checked he had corrected most, but had left the one with the full size tool up inadvertently. Once I contacted him about that he fixed it. He also refunded my purchase price since I was unhappy with the product. The one negative thing I will say about my interaction with the seller is that he tried to guilt me into removing my review, which is why it took me so long to change it – as a rule I will not change honest reviews at the seller’s request. However, the owner in this case did fix the misleading aspects of the product description, and the issues in my original review no longer apply to this product. On to the updated review:****************************************************************************************************************************As long as you know what you are actually ordering this is a great little cutter mattock for the price. The key word here is “little” – it is slightly larger than a standard hammer, so it is more for gardening and getting through roots of smaller trees and bushes than it is for removing a full size stump. The dimensions of the product are clearly given, and the erroneous pictures were removed, so anyone ordering should know what they are getting if paying attention. The tool is light and easy to use in tight spaces, which is key if you are doing landscaping in a garden bed. You can easily operate it with one hand, which makes it much easier to get at the roots of a bush that is surrounded by others. The head is sharp enough for getting through most roots, but could stand to be sharpened a bit.I am taking one star off because of a little concern about the mechanism for mounting the head. The mattock comes in 2 pieces and you attach the head by sliding it up the mattock until it stops. However, there is no notch or other mechanism to secure the head – you just bang it on the ground to mount it. This is not specific to this mattock – I’ve seen other less expensive ones that do the same thing, but I am able to still remove the head pretty easily after putting it on, which makes me concerned that it could come loose during use. I solution I have seen on similar tools was to install small wood screws right underneath the bottom of the head after it is installed.Overall an excellent cutter mattock for gardening needs for the price!
Great little tool but order with hope and a prayer. This is a great little tool, perfect size for my needs. But note that a variety of heads are available for this tool so be careful when ordering (which I was, I had a very specific need) – and even more importantly hope very hard that the warehouse pickers can tell all these tools apart. Sadly, I received the wrong tool the first time. Then had to waste my time driving to Whole Foods to send it back – thanks loads Amazon for putting the burden on me when you send the wrong item. A replacement was reordered and shipped automatically and it arrived too late so I had to do the work with a less suitable tool. Great tool encumbered with all around sub par service by Amazon.
Great price excellent performance. After reading some reviews, I decided to give this one a shot. It has the weight and handle length that I was missing on my previous hatchet. I just finished taking down a tree in my yard with little effort. Trunk was 4-5 inches and the weight of the head came in handy making each cut deep enough to make quick work of the tree. It came with a sharp enough blade to get anything done “right out of the box.” Don’t anticipate having to sharpen for awhile. I really liked the blade cover it came with. Makes it easy to store in a hiking backpack.Would buy again!
Good Hatchet, Better after being sharpened. The hatchet works great. Ideally, I wish the hatchet handle was 2″ longer, but it works fine as it is…just could be a bit better if the handle was a little longer. The hatchet came with a pseudo edge on the blade, but worked much better once I used a grinder and files to put a sharper edge on the hatchet’s blade. It’s a durable, effective, low-cost hatchet that works great.
Great product. The product works as expected. It’s lightweight and easy to use. It comes with a small rubber cover to protect the blade; it’s worth keeping. It also comes with a shield for the blade. The first one was broken but replaced quickly. The second one is perfect and protects against injuries.
Super solid. I was wondering if this would be solid based on the price… but WOW. The weight is good, the handle is long, the quality is there, and the blade is sharp! Super happy.
Keeps an edge. My favorite thing about this axe is that it keeps a sharp edge with little effort. (Smith’s Axe & Machete pull through sharpener is all I use on the axe – sharpening puck for the splitter.)I don’t use the splitter much; actually bought it by mistake, but it serves its purpose. For the cost it was definitely worth keeping in my shop.I use the axe all the time, mostly for splitting, store-bought wood bundles. The weight is perfect for me, it’s easy to swing and makes quick work of a wood bundle. It will split a big log and break it down into kindling. Before putting it away, I wipe it down, pull it through the sharpener 10 times in each direction, brush off the burrs, and it’s ready to go next time.I was skeptical of the handle. I originally wanted wood, but like I said, I bought the splitter by accident and liked the quality, but needed an axe. I live in the desert and this past summer it was 115° for too many days to remember. I won’t leave it out in the summer sun, but it otherwise has held up beyond my expectations. My only complaint is this: the edge guard that comes with it sucks. It was warped when I got it and it was lost soon after arrival. Not at all a big deal and barely worth mentioning, but nothings’s perfect, so it should be noted.I love this axe, use it all the time, going to buy another and think I’ll give a couple as gifts. Great tool, great quality, excellent value. And it keeps an edge!

Blade safety and size. Only giving this 4 stars until its properly used. I have yet to actually use this hatchet. I do alot of tent camping and needed a hatchet for splitting fire wood, this will be tested out in mid August. From first appearance it seems sturdy, its size is what I needed, I like that it came with a rubber cover and a hard cover for the blade. This is purely cosmetic but I don’t like all of the stickers that are difficult to take off. Other then that, it looks and seems like a good hatchet! I just have yet to use it.
Works great. I like the axe, especially with the built in splitting wedge.. it’s seems to be pretty solid. People say it’s not that really sharp. We’ll it’s not.. and thats ok.. just gave it a quick sharpen.. and you’ll be happy..
Parents love it. Gave this to my Dad as they’re in a rural area with lots of trees. He really likes it. I was very impressed with the quality and definitely well worth the buy.
Good hatchet…works just fine. Good blade protector. Glad I got this. This provides one way to shorten tree roots. I use it near the sidewalk to stop tree roots from going there. Seems to work. The hatchet is an excellent tool for that.

Quality and Endurance. just the right size and weight for cutting kindleing, great for camping and survival if needed, plan on spraying the head of the ax however with glow in the Dark Paint so that i don’t loose it, hehehe
