Effective. I refinish furniture and this is my go-to product to help prevent bleed-through. I find the smell very offensive though, and would recommend you wear a mask. It also ruins whatever applicator you choose to use, so I’ve started using pieces of old T-shirts that I cut up for this purpose. I wear a rubber glove and dip a small piece of the fabric into the shellac and apply it that way. I can then discard the fabric after using and don’t have to spend time trying to clean a brush or sponge applicator.
1/2 price for a dented can. New quarts are normally $22 – $28/can. What I received was a quart can with a large dent (about 1/4 of the can was pushed in). The can had no other scuffs or problems so this probably was damaged in shipping. Quart was full to the top, so everything was ok, and the shellac acted like all other that I used before.Very good product at a great price.
A classic finish. Shellac is a classic, natural, time-proven finish. I really like how it highlights the wood, curly maple in my case. It does not make it too yellow but all the detail comes up beautifully. I used a transparent water based poly finish in top of it with no issues. It dries very quickly and is not very even when it sets, another reason to cover it with a protective layer. I recommend this product.
Careful when opening. I wasn’t careful when opening and got it everywhere :(But it’s a rather good finish when you don’t make a mess
Will not stand up to UV rays. Just don’t varnish anything that’s exposed to the sun. You’ll be very dissapointed.
Thin with alcohol. This was my first time using shellac, and I learned a few things in the process.The can doesn’t tell you this, but you should thin this product with high-proof alcohol to get good results (like isopropyl 90% or more). If you do not thin, or apply too many coats of overly thick product, it will increase the time shellac will take to properly harden. Luckily, it is also very forgiving and easy to correct mistakes.It does leave a very high-quality, ultra high-gloss finish on projects. I went over mine with 000 steel wool to reduce the mirror-like finish.Note that shellac does not last very long and should be used asap or results will suffer. This was my first time using it, and I like the product very much but will buy flakes next time and mix up my own. It’s really as easy as adding alcohol and stirring.
Fast, Easy, and Quality Coverage. I bought this shellac to finish a wood shiplap wall. I wanted something that was easy to apply and fix. This delivered on that. I applied using a terry cloth covered sponge and a bottle. Very fast to apply and was able to touch up small spots without them standing out.It was important that this product didn’t change color of the wood so I bought the un-tinted. In my opinion, this shellac enhanced the natural color of the wood without changing the color.Two coats on the walls provided the coverage I was looking for. First coat soaked in deeply and hit it quickly with a brillo pad. I had planned on buffing with the brillo after the second coat but it didn’t need it. Dries super fast and allows for multiple coats in a short amount of time.Very happy with my purchase and will be using this product for other wood wall surfaces in my house, highly recommend.
