  1. Airmid Plantwalker August 23, 2013 at 12:00 am

A must have book for any serious herbalist. Safety should come before anything else when dealing with medicinal plants, and this book assures that the practicing herbalist is well armed in that area. Well written and organized.

  2. Unparalleled. Unlike a lot of botanical safety handbooks, this one isn’t written by phytopharmaceutical researchers only, or hands-on practitioners only, medical anthropologists only — or, heaven forbid, science journalists only — but by a true international dream team. Almost a decade in the making, this massive tome is simply a monumental, towering unparalleled achievement. Understand, we’re not just reprinting the same old stuff here, but going back to primary sources and validating everything. Those looking for a quick a decisive answer — a simple “green light” or “red light” — will be frustrated, as the book acknowledges and delves into nuance and uncertainty. But when all is said and done, you walk away knowing where the nuances and uncertainties come from, armed with the tools to make an informed decision.Take for example, the section on Echinacea. We get to see where we’re looking at E. purpurea, E. angustofolia, etc.; aerial parts vs. seeds vs. root; hydroethanolic extract vs. fresh expressed juice vs. crude plant material… And when the question is raised of its suitability in autoimmune disease (controversial to this day, and as of yet, not settled in the scientific literature), we get a survey of a few dozen experienced herbal practitioners to supplement the formal research record.Warning: this book can be frightening in the hands of those unschooled in medical terminology, and scientific phrasing in regards to uncertainty, as there is no herb that is portrayed as completely, unequivocally safe.

  3. Very clear and precise. I would have preferred if it offered the name in its common form and not its latin name, but because I have other herbal books that I can refer to for the Latin name, it is easy to look it up and it provides detailed and useful information on safety precautions for each herb. Definitely a necessity to have if working with herbs on a regular basis.

  4. A Wonderful, Must-Have Reference For The Herbalist. I heard about this book from a herbal school in which I am enrolled. It is edited by the American Herbalist Guild. It has all sorts of safety information concerning different herbs, AND it has all the relevant, appropriate studies on herb-drug interactions. Since so many people take a medication or two of some sort, it is a great resource to double-check that a herb is not going to counteract the medication. It was helpful when I had a question about Skullcap and hepatic function. If you work with herbs, and are formulating for friends or family, I would recommend you get this book.

  5. The spine is cheapishly made to hold 1035 pages it weighs close to 7 pounds ,good this book exists. I gave American Herbal Products Associations Botanical Safety Hankbook a 5 star review even though the spine is weak and made of cheapish material. I was expecting a better quality book for the price, it is expensive. This is a second book order. I returned the first one because the spine was coming apart It’s a heavy, big book weighing almost 7 pounds with 1035 pages A lot of hours spent on the internet researching herb contraindications with prescription medicines. Not finding much of anything. This all-in-one- book has all the research evidence-based, more than 500 species of herbs ,and so much more that I couldn’t find on my own. I started my apothecary, growing and purchasing herbs, learning how to make medicines etc.Purchased many books by well-known authors to compare their knowledge and information on herbs. Knowing there are alternatives to prescription medications is a relief.
