Many, many benefits and a couple of caveats. For some reason, the science of nutrition has become more like religion in modern times….as if what the owner believes will magically make the dog healthy. Dogs and their bodies cannot share our belief systems.I’ve been using Science Diet brand for over 30 years now, various formulas for individual pets with their needs. They do very well. Great, in fact. There is the correct amount of protein: they can digest and metabolize it all and not have excess go through them or harm the renal system and cause stones. The calcium is correctly combined with other things so it is available to the dog.The volume I need to feed for each meal is small enough that it does not risk bloat, cause gas, or interfere with digestion. In other words, it fits comfortably in my dog’s stomach when it expands with the moisture in there. The bag lasts a LONG time because meal sizes are small due to nutritional density. It does not have “flavors” dogs cannot taste (they don’t have taste buds like we do) or artificially added colors and shapes dogs do not care about.I measure the meals with an actual measuring cup, so I know if my dog is losing his appetite right away.I use small bites for my larger dog because it slows down his eating, taking him longer to finish, which is healthier and allows him to enjoy it more.I like to feed poultry-based foods as they are easiest to digest, but lamb and turkey are high in tryptophan, which can be soothing and support good mental health. When it comes to ingredients, I trust what veterinarians and canine nutritional experts approve, not what the average consumer thinks sounds good, or what dogs would pick in a lineup (Cheetos or brownies would probably win, really, with dogs). Grapes and raisins are healthy for us, but can kill dogs. They are not just like us. This product is one I trust because it is made for domestic dogs. Yes, “biproducts” sound gross, and maybe they are, but bear in mind humans fed dogs offal and leftovers, not the best cuts, historically. Dogs got what they got, and ate what we ate, and we were pretty poor. We taught them to help us hunt, but also not to kill and eat the things, but to bring them to us or hold them in one place, even rats (because we wanted them to kill all the rats, not just what they could eat). These guys will eat poop and raw dead birds maggots and all in the yard if they can. Cooked and properly processed biproducts are not that gross.CON: Science Diet on their smaller bags of product, like for cats, is using Velcro to allow bags to be re-sealable. It works very well, keeping the food fresher. While I currently decant the dog food into another container, I think it would be great if they added this to all sizes of bags. If you buy this, rolling it tightly and clipping, putting in large Ziplocs, or getting a container to keep it fresh (and not stale) will be the best methods.NOTE: If your dog has a confirmed allergy to a specific grain, like corn, the usual culprit, as that is New World and was not around most of the time mankind was creating dogs, then this may not be for you. Even formulas that have barley or rice sometimes have corn products, so read labels carefully or use dogfoodadvisor dot com. Limited ingredient foods can be the best thing. However, make sure the allergy is not to peas, a common culprit, used in many grain-free foods, before you go crazy. Let your vet help you
BEST MEAL EVER FOR MY ALLERGIC DOG. I got my dog off a local app, since I was so excited to get him I didn’t ask questions and went home with him without asking questions. Come to find out later on he’s allergic to chicken and he was abused and very unhealthy skin. His skin was flaky, the area around his eyes had no fur and he would constantly scratch. Without wanting to spend much money on the vet and test for allergies, I looked into this meal, and gave it a shot and it’s the best meal I highly recommend!! Since he’s acerbic to chicken I get the lamb and small bites at pet i but I started out w this one, they’re bigger size so that’s why I went with the small bytes. Please if your dog has allergies do him a favor and get him this type of food, I love seeing my dog enjoy his life and not scratch and make his skin bleed!! Hope my review helped few other people thinking twice on it. Also helped buying the Omega Skin+Coat treats which also help out with allergies and dry skin, but that was well after I had been purchasing this food. He loves them and gets excited when I offer some, he loves a healthy skin and fur! 😄
I have a Corgi. She absolutely loves this food! I just add some water to it and she does not hesitate eating it all up!
2 DAYS LATE with no updates on the late delivery. the food is great but it was 2 days late, going back to Petco, no more amazon
My Oliver LOVES this brand and flavor. Just wish the shipping wasn’t so slow getting me me. But a great product
Dogs love it. Our dogs love it.
Works great for my pup. He loves it eats it up very quickly…
dog enjoys the taste. dog enjoys the taste. science diet is the only brand i use.
5 vets Vets reccomeneded this brand to me. Got my service dog 7 years ago, needed a high quality kibble to balance out her diet and we’ve stuck with this brand most of those years. Digests and passes well, coming from someone who picks up poop in little bags. We’ve met several vets and they’re always pleased that this is the brand we use when it comes to kibble. Takes a while to rehydrate but can do some completely if ya want. I haven’t had any issues since switching to Amazon to get the food. Its always fresh, never past the sell by date or rancid on arrival, I use the velcro closure on the packaging and also keep it in a storage bin and it keeps well that way. I love the subscription option too because I get a few bucks off and always know it’ll be here on time and can skip or reschedule the next delivery if we haven’t used as much kibble that month. 🙂
Good product. Good product. Only buy during big sales (at least 25% off in addition to subscribe & save then cancel. Why? Because it’s far cheaper at local retailers than via Amazon.
My dog loves this stuff. We have a rescue dog and this is what they feed them at our local animal shelter so we have continued to feed him this and he usually has it cleaned out of his feeding dish within minutes of putting down for him.Hey he is healthy and happy and has good vet visits so hey one cannot complain about that. And the price is way better than the chain pet supply stores.
Dog food. My dog loves this. Kibble size is perfect for my medium dog. High quality food.
Good. Good product and my pet loved it
Hill’s Science Diet Small Bites: For Dogs Who Deserve Gourmet, Even If They Can’t Tell Time. Look, I know what you’re thinking: “Dog food is dog food, right?” Wrong. Enter Hill’s Science Diet Small Bites Chicken & Barley Recipe, where the food your dog eats could be the thing that makes them the happiest creature on the planet. This isn’t just kibble; this is like a Michelin-star meal in a bag. It’s packed with all the high-end stuff your dog needs to stay happy, healthy, and looking dashing in that doggie sweater you definitely made them wear last Christmas. This stuff’s got real chicken. Not some weird by-product that would make you cringe if you were human. It’s made with actual chicken, and the barley? Oh, that’s just there to be all supportive and provide fiber like it’s been working on its “gut health” Instagram account for months. And those small bites? Perfect for dogs who don’t have time to chew like their lives depend on it. It’s like the snack-sized portion of dog food that says, “I get it, you’re too cool to chew for 10 minutes.”PROS: • Real chicken: Not some questionable meat byproduct. Your dog deserves chicken, not mystery meat. • Small bites: Because, let’s face it, dogs don’t have time to pretend they’re going to chew forever. They need efficiency. • Chicken & barley combo: A power couple for digestion, energy, and overall health. If these two were humans, they’d be married with 2.5 kids and a dog. • Supports digestion: Dogs are like, “I can eat this and still be fabulous.” The barley adds that fiber your dog needs without feeling like they’re getting a broccoli side dish. • Balanced nutrition: It’s like a personal trainer for your dog’s insides. It’ll keep them in shape, both physically and, let’s be honest, mentally because you know your dog’s ready to learn the next trick.CONS: • Pricey: If your dog’s got a taste for the finer things in life (and by that, I mean real chicken), it might cost you a little more than the bargain bin stuff. But hey, your dog’s worth it, right? • Size: The 5lb bag might not last as long as you’d like if you’ve got a hungry pup who treats meals like an Olympic sport. Pro tip: Buy in bulk and save some coin. So, there you have it…Hill’s Science Diet Small Bites Chicken & Barley Recipe is the high-class kibble your dog didn’t know they were missing. They’ll be giving you that grateful look like, “Finally, someone understands what I deserve!” And you can sit back, knowing you’re not just feeding your dog; you’re nourishing them. Which, I mean, is probably more than most of us can say for ourselves.
My dog is so picky. My dog is such a picky eater so I purchased this product. He refused to eat it. But my sons dog absolutely loves it. So you have a customer in my son for sure.
