Comparison with the Rebel SL cameras. This mirrorless camera’s viewfinder is digital rather than optical, so the image you see is actually what the photo will look like. And it can use eye detection for focusing and show you the results in the viewfinder. The eye detection works well, and it’s worth buying for this reason alone if you’re using a lens with a shallow depth of field like a 50mm.The downside is that it’s heavier and bulkier, and harder to hold than the SL3. The body is 25% heavier, and you need an adapter for non-RP lenses. This camera also has a larger gap between the hand grip and the lens, so the lens is harder to hold.In low light its built-in automatic exposure settings tend to reduce the speed to 1/60 and increase the ISO to 10,000 to get clear but low resolution pictures. It’s noticeably better in low light that the SL series, though still not as good as mobile phones that can align and stack multiple images into one. If Canon offered a built-in stacking feature, I’d think it would become a very popular camera. The eye detection only works when the camera can distinguish an eye’s iris from the white cornea around it, and doesn’t work if the subject turns away or moves too far back.

  2. The perfect balance of beautiful video and beautiful photos. I previously had a Canon T3i and I absolutely loved that thing. It was amazing the results that camera could do for its time and I will always think it’s one of the best budget cameras ever made. However, I’ve recently gotten more into video and that is one thing the T3i wasn’t meeting my needs for. It was missing so many features like autofocus and modern video resolutions and frame rates. Therefore, my search for a new camera began. I seriously debated nearly every camera in this price range from every manufacturer. Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, you name it. However, it seemed like they all had one fatal flaw to them. Sony with their weird coloring, Fujifilm with the overheating issues, Panasonic with the awful autofocus. Some were better at photos, some were better at video. However, I needed something that would do great with both, as I wanted this to be something I could shoot professional portraits with but also shoot vlogs. At the end of the day, all signs pointed to this camera, and I’m so glad this is the one I chose.I’m not a super-advanced user, however, I do think I’ve moved past the beginner stage of photography and videography. I think this camera really fits me perfectly as I’m not incredibly overwhelmed with options and features that I don’t know how to use, but it still has a ton of capability that allows me to learn more about photography and videography. I’ve also just been using the 24-105 kit lens that comes with this bundle on Amazon. The video on this is amazing. HUGE step up from the T3i. The face detecting autofocus works great and nearly all of my shots are perfectly in focus unless it’s super dark which it has a little more of a struggle with but obviously any camera would. I was a little hesitant about the fairly disabled 4k capability with this camera due (disabled dual pixel AF, crop factor, 30 min time limit, 24 fps max) especially since other cameras in the price range have a more robust 4k capability. However, I’ve found that 1080p meets my needs just fine and looks absolutely gorgeous. It’s also much more friendly on the file size and processing in video editing. The photo capability has shocked me even more than the video. I knew this would obviously be a great camera for photos, but I didn’t realize what a step up from my T3i it would be. I honestly thought my T3i photos would look just about as good as this camera since the T3i does admittedly take amazing photos. However, this blows it out of the water. The autofocus on this is SO much better. With the T3i, fast moving subjects were nearly impossible to get in focus. This does so much better. The full-frame sensor on this camera makes a huge difference too. The low light performance is so much better and the size of these photos is insane. You can zoom in to the photos so much and it’s still amazingly clear. As for the body of the camera itself, it feels incredibly well made. Grabbing my T3i now feels like a cheap plastic toy compared to this thing. It feels very solid and durable. The grip on the camera is incredibly easy and comfortable to hold. The only negative thing I’ve encountered so far is the kit lens that comes with this bundle doesn’t have a physical switch between autofocus and manual focus. You have to go into the camera settings to switch between them. I don’t find myself doing this very often as the autofocus is amazing but when I do need manual focus it’s a little bit of an inconvenience.Overall, it’s an amazing camera and I’m very happy that I went with this one.

Beautiful camera for beginners and intermediate. I have been thinking of replacing my t4i for a few years and I’m glad I did. Most of the negative reviews must be from serious/pro photographers who would be better served with the higher end R camera ($$$). However, I mostly take pictures of my family, vacations, and maybe the occasional scenery shot. The auto focus is very fast and it can continuously autofocus for example when your kid charges at you to see what picture you just took, you can just keep clicking. Our first trip was to the beach and I was blown away by the pictures. My T4i is a bit old at this point, but I didn’t realize how old it was until i upgraded to the RP. Beaches have a lot of backlight reflected from the sand and water which causes people to appear as shadows. But even on auto, people’s faces are bright, easy to see, and in focus and the background behind them isn’t washed out. I had a much higher percentage of in focus, well balanced images to choose from than my old camera. I ended up getting the lens with the RP as well and even though my old lens had slightly better specs, I had no problems with the new lens (maybe because the body is so much better than my old camera). I would definitely buy this again given the choice.

  7. Wow, what a camera! – but there are downsides. I traded in my aging Canon D50 SLR, and made the jump to mirrorless with this EOS RP after reading Ken Rockwell’s review on it. I wanted ultra low light capability, shallow depth of field for separating backgrounds, and live view that showed me my exposure in real time. What I got exceeded my expectations in every way. The shutter is much more quiet, the image quality is astounding, and the autofocus – THE AUTOFOCUS! In the past, I’ve had bad luck with front-focusing and back-focusing lenses, especially my 50mm 1.8. The mirrorless camera design is immune to focus tuning calibration issues, so every focus is spot on, even with an ultra-shallow DOF.Took it out on a millpond for some fall pics, and it did everything I needed, and did it well. A camera is only as good as the photographer, but it helps if the camera doesn’t get in the way. I usually bracket my shots with high contrast pictures, but I was able to see in the viewfinder what I’d get when I underexposed slightly to bring out the blue in the sky, and that’s exactly what I got. NIce!I coupled this with the 24 – 105 F4 lens, because I wanted a decent close-up focus capability, and I wanted the ability to use the full frame shallow depth of field to separate people from backgrounds for portraits. I also tried it on my old cheap 50mm 1.8 lens, and – wow. Just wow.The only con? Short battery life. Buy extras. Mine crapped out after a few hours on the water, but I had a backup so it wasn’t a problem. That’s about it. This camera has wicked low light capability at high ISO with very little noise.Best camera I’ve owned by a long shot, and significantly better than my old DSLR. I’m now a fan of mirrorless!*** 2/1/2022 update ***Now that it’s winter, I’ve had some experiences that have changed my opinion on this camera. For one, the battery life was not good when I first got it during the summer: but in cold weather, batteries hold up for less time. This made the poor battery life on this camera downright dismal. The bigger problem is with their new STM lenses. All their mirrorless lenses use the new STM system, which is much more quiet than the old USM technology. However, this technology is “focus by wire,” which means there’s no mechanical linkage between the focus ring and the motor – it’s all digital. You turn the ring, and the motor responds based on the sensors. When the lens focus motor stopped working on a cold outdoor shoot in the wind, there was no manual focus option available to me and the camera became nothing more than a brick as I turned the focus ring with no results.I have sold the camera and lens, and I have a 6D Mark II on its way. No more short battery life. No more loss of manual focus backup in cold weather. Even better, I regain compatibility with my wife’s DSLR lenses. It was a fun experiment, and in theory the mirorless camera was better on paper. However, the limitations of this model and STM lens design in the winter were not worth the live preview, quiet shutter operation, and lack of viewfinder blackout. At least not to me.

  8. A surprisingly wonderful product. One of the best cameras I’ve had the opportunity of using in recent times. It’s has some great autofocus features and does wonders with well-lit subjects. The prospect of having a full-frame mirror less at this cost is pretty low and the Canon RP really stands out as one of a kind in its class.Personally, my only regret was it’s performance in low light and night settings. On its default settings, it compromises its sharpness for higher exposures and ISO, but it’s not something that cannot be corrected with a few manual adjustments and setting tweaks.Overall, in spite of its age, it’s a great deal even in 2023.

  9. I’m a retired 30 year studio pro. THIS IS AMAZING. RETIRED I pulled out my unused for 13 year 5D MII. A friend at chuch showed me his new Rp. I played with it and was BLOWN AWAY. Ordered it that night. I’ve used it a couple of days and it keeps blowing me away with features I didn’t even know it had. During my career, it was not uncommon for me to buy 5-10k cameras and same with lenses. I’m amazed at this thing at 999, Plus 10% back in points on my CC. I also bought the lens adapter to use my “L” lenses and they work great. 70-200 2,8 and 24-105 F4.I am enjoying photography again doing photography for my church.

  10. LOVE IT. I love this camera! Great camera to start with to eventually start moving up the R series cameras! But even if you keep it, it works great!

  11. Wonderful Camera. In the short time I have had this camera every picture I have taken has been great. I first took my camera to the mountains and took some beautiful pictures of the lake and surrounding pine trees that came out even better than I expected. The colors are amazing in every picture. I do recommend purchasing the flash attachment that I didn’t realize was sold separately. Well worth the money.

  14. What an amazing camera at this price. Canon has done something awesome here with the cheapest new mirrorless on the market. And it doesn’t feel cheap at all! I’ve had it for a few weeks now and it’s been great. The image quality is a significant upgrade on my 5d Mark 2, low light performance is great, autofocus is super fast and accurate, and it’s very light weight. The R series cameras are amazing and this is no exception especially considering the price. It’s a steal at under a thousand for an entry level pro quality body.
