  1. Nothing But the Best for Wrigley. The media could not be loaded. ♦Meet Wrigley: the 4-year-old 7lb Maltese who has us wrapped around his fluffy paws. Wrigley has no known allergies.♦SummaryWrigley has been quite selective when it comes to food ever since we adopted him 2.5 years ago. It’s my opinion (and I’m not in the veterinary field) that Stella & Chewy’s is one of the highest quality commercial dog foods available; the ingredients are second to none. It was also the first real food we offered to Wrigley that he would eat right away without any encouragement. For a short period of time, we fed Wrigley exclusively Stella & Chewy’s brand freeze-dried raw food, but now I also buy Orijen and Primal. This would be an easy 5-stars BUT… (see my comment below for explanation).•IMPORTANT: A negative review mentioned bone fragments in the food. I actually found one today, so I wanted to mention this as well. I do crumble the patty and remember having found fragments previously (not too often, but more than once), so I will be specifically looking for them in the future and I would recommend that you do the same. I have not noticed bone fragments in the other freeze-dried raw patties Wrigley has tried from Orijen or Primal.♦Our Journey to Freeze-Dried Raw Food•Food 1: We purchased a bag of mid-priced kibble from a well-known pet store on the night we adopted him. Wrigley refused to eat it, except if I hand fed him the pieces, one by one. It would sit in the bowl until the next day, even when he was fed nothing else.•Food 2: Wrigley was recovering from knee surgery and our trainer recommended the Natural Balance Lamb Roll because we could sneak in his liquid medication that he wouldn’t take any other way. He snarfed it down at every meal. Before ordering it for the third time on Amazon, I read the reviews and realized that the ingredients held very little nutritional value, including sugar towards the top. I would possibly buy this again as a rare treat for Wrigley, but never a full meal.•Food 3: After seeing commercials for Blue Buffalo, I purchased a bag of their Small Breed kibble. Wrigley would only eat it if I hand fed him a piece or two at a time. Furthermore, the mix has two shapes and he would avoid eating one of them.•Food 4: Next was Blue Buffalo Divine Delights, mini containers of wet stew-like food. I would stock up on all of the flavors when they were on sale for a buck. Sometimes Wrigley would eat the whole container. Mostly he would spit out the chunks of potatoes and carrots on the floor and sometimes not even finish the rest of the meat and gravy. I’m not as environmentally conscious as I’d like to be, but going through so much plastic waste bothered me.•Enter Stella & Chewy’s: sometime during all of this, we were given a sample patty of Stella & Chewy’s Duck Duck Goose Freeze-Dried Raw Food at a Farmer’s Market. Wrigley is my first dog and I never even heard of this kind of food. I put it in a bin with all of his treats and forgot about it for a while. Eventually, I gave the patty to Wrigley and he devoured it. I thought the texture was gross (thinking about ground up animals) and didn’t want to touch it with my bare hands, but Wrigley loved it.•Food 5: A local pet store somehow convinced me to try the frozen Stella & Chewy’s raw food. They even said that feeding him high quality food like this would eliminate his tear stains. Wrigley refused to eat the hamburger patty-like raw food that needed to be kept frozen.•Never Going BackAt this point, I bought a full-size bag of Stella & Chewy’s freeze-dried raw food. Wrigley loved it and I decided I was never going back to lesser-quality food. Wrigley has bad knees and had surgery for luxated patella (dislocated kneecap, a condition common in small dogs). He is still very young, and we want him to be as healthy as possible so he will not suffer as much pain from his knee condition and eventual arthritis. We want him to enjoy a long life with us that includes lots of snuggling and playing. The vet also emphasized the importance of keeping him at a healthy weight to avoid additional stress on his joints. Feeding him size-appropriate portions of high-quality food helps keep him that way. Selfishly, I also hope that paying more for food now will mean spending less on expensive vet bills in the future.♦Stella & Chewy’sWrigley has enjoyed many of the Stella & Chewy’s freeze-dried raw varieties: Duck Duck Goose*, Phenomenal Pheasant, Surf n’ Turf, Dandy Lamb Dinner*, Absolutely Rabbit, and possibly more that I’m forgetting. Asterisks denote Wrigley’s Favorites.Wrigley weighs about 7-8 lbs. When I feed him freeze-dried raw, he gets one patty per meal. We crush it into little pieces and put it in a bowl for him. Some people mix in warm water, but we give it to him plain.I found a site called DogFoodAdvisor and Stella & Chewy’s Freeze-Dried Dog Food is given the highest available rating. They evaluate dog foods based off the ingredients listed on the package (not actual samples) and are far more knowledgeable than I am.&Diams;Cons(iderations)•It’s very important to give the dog access to plenty of water when feeding freeze-dried raw.•Stella & Chewy’s recalled several varieties of food for listeria on December 10, 2015, several days before I am writing this. It didn’t affect the Duck Duck Goose Freeze-Dried for Dogs. That’s not something I want to read, but it won’t stop me from choosing Stella & Chewy’s in the future.•Expensive – especially for larger dogs.•Despite what the pet store employees told me, feeding Wrigley exclusively top-quality food (except for occasional treats) has done nothing to reduce his tear stains.&Diams; What Wrigley Eats NowFor a period of time, Wrigley was eating Stella & Chewy’s freeze-dried raw for every meal. Please see comment below why we purchase additional brands as well now.To save money, Wrigley eats Orijen kibble for his morning meal. Orijen is the first brand of kibble that he will often (but not always) eat right after we pour it in his bowl. We’ve purchased these varieties: Adult Dog http://amzn.com/B00BK2XSL0, Six Fish http://amzn.com/B00A4KFOS4, and Regional Red http://amzn.com/B00BK2XLKS. I believe them to be of equal high quality to Stella & Chewy’s.Wrigley gets a freeze-dried raw patty for his night time meal. I’ve recently been buying mostly Orijen brand freeze-dried raw but I also buy Primal brand and Stella & Chewy’s occasionally, depending upon where I purchase his food. Wrigley likes Orijen and Primal just as much as Stella & Chewy’s and the quality is on par. We’ve purchased these Orijen varieties: Adult Dog http://amzn.com/B00EB7N924, Regional Red http://amzn.com/B00E5A7S6A, and Tundra http://amzn.com/B00E5A7U2C. These are the Primal ones that we’ve bought: Lamb http://amzn.com/B00BC4BIKE and Duck http://amzn.com/B00B68V7RA. I think Orijen is a Canadian company and Primal is based in San Francisco. Primal was kind enough to send me a sample of several of their varieties for Wrigley to try.

  2. $6,000 in vet bills and my dog almost died. 2/13/18: My two dogs love, I repeat, LOVE Stella & Chewy’s (all flavors). In fact, they love it so much that I can no longer get them to eat anything else. They were previously eating Orijen and Honest Kitchen (both high quality dog foods, as far as my research tells me) but now they turn their noses up at both. I almost wish I hadn’t introduced them to this because it’s pretty expensive, especially for two dogs….8/31/18 UPDATE: I exclusively fed my dogs Stella & Chewy’s for about 6-9 months. They love this food. I mean really, really love it (see prior review from February above). I purchased the first bag at a local pet store and intended to give it as an occasional treat but it quickly became the only thing they wanted. Given the cost, the joke was on me. Anyway, two weeks ago one of my dogs became VERY sick with pancreatitis and cholangiohepatitis. I mean sick as in she almost died. She was treated inpatient at a prestigious animal hospital in NYC and multiple doctors on the internal medicine service stated that although there is no way to prove it 100%, they felt extremely confident that my dog became ill as a result of infection from her raw diet, the very high fat content of the food, or more than likely a combination of both. This was devastating to me, as I had been paying an arm and a leg for what I thought was the best possible food for my dogs. These reputable, expert veterinarians who treat thousands of animals each year told me that since the raw food craze has taken over they have seen a huge spike in infections resulting in the deaths of many beloved pets. It honestly sort of pains me to write this review, as I think that overall Stella & Chewy’s creates good products and as a company I do not doubt their good intentions. However, apparently the risks of feeding our pets a raw diet are many and this is not information that I want to keep to myself. If you are not worried about infection (because yes I know, this is a chance you take buying ANY commercial pet food), please also pay attention to the high fat content of these patties compared to that of many other types of dog foods. Understand that like humans, dogs are at risk for things like pancreatitis when they are eating food that is too high in fat. I was most recently feeding my dogs the Duck Duck Goose formula and in retrospect realize that the fat content was probably way too high. I feel like a moron for not paying closer attention to this. It is suspected that my dog had a low grade, chronic pancreatitis for many months from the higher fat diet which then became exacerbated by an infection from the raw food (this assessment from the veterinarians was backed up by many expensive tests but I will not bore you with those details). In summary, I suppose this review is not specifically for Stella & Chewy’s but applies to all raw pet food or any pet food with very high fat content. I wish that I had known some of the negative experiences of pet owners before me so that I could have made a better choice for my dogs. I don’t doubt that millions of pets are eating raw without any issues, but I trust that the animal hospital was not lying when they told me of this epidemic of sorts that they have been seeing with the recent rise in raw food popularity. Many people who read this will continue to buy raw, but having read my review at least they can consider themselves warned. After much research and debate my dogs are back to eating Honest Kitchen Base Mix topped with home-cooked lean meats.

  3. I depend on Stella/Chewy. Very very healthy for that my small dogs love!

  4. Jessyca from LA August 16, 2023 at 12:00 am

My Siberian Husky’s favorite. This is a top quality food product & worth every penny. My finicky pup loves this as a treat (given whole) or broken up & mixed in with her food.

  5. My pets love this stuff. My dogs are beyond spoiled so normally I cook them fresh dog food. In between meals if they are hungry I have this out for them (or some flavor variation as they really enjoy the super beef as well). They can devour it. The only downside is the price but it’s worth it for me. I’d rather spend money on something they like than waste a bunch of money on random dog foods that collect dust in the dry food bowl and ultimately end up being disposed. I have given away bags upon bags of dog food because I have created little monsters but never does this hit the trash can or get donated because they actually eat and like it that much. Stella and Chewy knows what they are doing.

  6. CRITICAL SHOPPER FROM THE “NORTH STAR STATE” August 29, 2023 at 12:00 am

Nice and healthy food product for my dogs. Nice and healthy food product for my dogs!

  7. ALMOST as tasty as a treat. These patties have been a GAME CHANGER for my labradoodle’s breakfast. She is a very picky eater so we have tired a lot of various brands and flavors. The quality of these patties is immediately noticeable compared to others we have tried. They’re made with real lamb, and you can tell just by looking at them that they’re a step above. They stay in tact and we break them up and hide them in her toys to keep her interested. We have used them with warm water also but our pup loves to push them around with her snout and then eat them broken into quarters. We have tried all the flavors but lately the lamb has been a big hit. Chicken and beef are also in the rotation for breakfast. They are also great if she is not in the mood for other food and we don’t want to fill her full of traces. (she is super picky eating some stuff)I appreciate the quality of the patient and the Stella & Chewy brand is well respected in the industry. We are big advocates of the quality ingredients and are health conscious ourselves. It is important for us our dog stays healthy and has a well rounded diet. They are a bit pricier than others but I think you pay for what you get.Overall they are high-quality, super convenient, slightly more expensive, and most importantly my DOG LOVES them! If it means she eats well and is healthy then it’s worth it for us. I recommend at least trying the small bag if you’re unsure about the flavor. (also try Chicken and Beef)

  8. Even finicky or sick dogs seem to love the Dandy Lamb patties. Too expensive for long-term use, but I have used the Stella and Chewy patties with three dogs and they loved their Dandy Lamb. Examples: Dog #1. My Airedale terrier, almost 12 years old, was coming to the end of a life marred by severe inflammatory bowel disease. It was hard to get her to eat, even with appetite boosters. But she would eat the Dandy Lamb patties.Dog #2. I babysat for a young Havanese when his owner was dealing with her daughter’s hospitalization. I noticed that he was vomiting frequently, on the chicken -based food his owner was using. I asked her if I could change his food, as I suspected a chicken senstivity — it seems to be more common than many people realize. The dog loved the Dandy Lamb, and the vomiting stopped. I suggested that the owner switch her dog to a lamb-based food, or even to another protein, like salmon.Dog #3, a miniature poodle, was just past puppyhood when I cared for her last time. A frequent visitor, she was healthy and showing no signs of homesickness. But she refused to eat the kibble her owner sent, even when I tried to hand feed her. No dog gets sick on my watch, so I quickly ordered Dandy Lamb. She became a happy, eager eater. I advised her owner to mix it in with her usual food to transition her back to it.All in all, I find lamb-based foods more digestible and well-tolerated for most dogs, but some dogs seem to find other lamb foods, like Canidae, too bland. The Stella and Chewy Dandy Lamb products seem to have a good taste, yet do not irritate sensitive tummies. Unless you thoroughly soak the patties in water before serving them, make sure that your dog drinks more water, because some dogs become a bit constipated otherwise. And remember that lamb will change the color of your dog’s stools, often to a bit yellowish, so don’t be alarmed.

  9. Great product but smells heavily of pot. This is a review of both the product and delivery. The product is great my dogs love it. It is very well-made and has a lot of vitamins and minerals and is a great alternative as I normally make my own food but when you’re busy, this is great they love it and it’s good for them now onto the delivery process and the smell of pot. This package was left at the door. We went out to get it and brought it in the entire room smelled like pot. I’ve never smelled anything like it. The bag was like a pot factory that means whoever delivered this was obviously heavily smoking pot. Is this the type of people that Amazon employed? One thing to be able to smoke pot at home or an event, but to get behind the wheel and deliver it to customers and then have the product smells so heavily of weeds that we had to keep the door of the room open to the outside to air out. The bags of food smells I hope that it didn’t permeate through the bag. But welcome to the society we now live in, hopefully Amazon will do something about it.

  10. My dog LOVES this food. He gets so excited for dinner time. Very good ingredients. With the organic fruits and vegetables I’m pretty sure my dog eats better than I do. I break the patties up and add water. It’s expensive but it’s not cost prohibitive for my small 10 lb dog because he doesn’t eat very much. He still has free range access to kibble and he gets one daily special meal with 2 patties at dinner time. I’m pretty sure my dog would be devastated if I stopped buying it for him.

  11. Worth the money. My dog is very finicky. This is the only dog food that my dog will eat. It comes it different flavors but the chicken is his favorite. It’s a little costly but it’s worth it.

  12. Heathy and delicious! Does not cause any stomach upset. My little little Yorkie Schnauzer mix is a very picky eater. When she was 8 weeks old she was eating puppy chow and liked it just fine. Soon after, I switched her to a higher quality food and from that point on she didn’t like anything. Anything I got her other than home cooked. I don’t always have time for that. Then I introduced her to Stella and Chewy’s and SHE LOVES IT! She gets so excited when she sees me preparing it. She eats every last last bite. It’s important to me that her food is high quality and good for her. It’s also important that she loves it. With Stella and Chewy’s, I can check those boxes off. This is very healthy food and grain-free. Dogs LOVE IT.I originally tried this with my last dog and she loved it, now my Gracie loves it too.

  13. Expensive, but very well loved treat. These patties are amazing!!! Our 2 pups, and 6 foster dogs have all been obsessed!!! I’m talking, do any trick we want them to, obsessed. Will actually sit and stay, obsessed! Aside from Stella and chewy having good ingredients, a well known brand and a variety of products, they had very little smell (perhaps due to being freeze dried?), we felt good known our dogs were having something tasty and nutritious, and they work great for treat time and training time. They are costly… I won’t lie, the price is the biggest downside. And because the dogs love them, they tend not to last long around here. And we do have to hide them because they will seriously sniff the bag out and try to rip it open! But if you’re looking for a good treat that your dogs will go crazy for, even if they’re picky, this is it!!!

  14. Stella and Chewy’s keeps my dog well and happy. I feed my 3 year old, 10 pound Aussie Doodle Stella and Chewy’s 3 Super Beef patties broken in 1/4’s every day and a 1/4 cup of Katherine Heigl’s Badlands baked super complete dog food every day. She is very well. Never sick. I take for check up once a year. I think this food has made her have a better quality of life. It’s expensive but well worth it.

  15. Very happy doxie. My mini doxie is a VERY picky eater. She will quickly eat a food for two maybe three days and then she will act uninterested- eating eventually but there have been times I have tossed food that sat out and she just didn’t eat it. Not this food! She has been eating it everyday for a month and she begs for it – sits at her bowl and whines, she never does that! I am very happy to find something that she enjoys and that I feel good about giving her. The freeze dried patties are super easy to feed and although they are expensive I feel the quality is worth it. I just break up the patties with my fingers and add some water and sometimes I combine with another food to spread it out. Overall very happy and as long as my pup keeps eating it I’ll keep buying it.
