LOVE. IT. My daughter and I adore this device–we bought it months ago, and we still use a few times a week, sometimes more. It takes less than five minutes from start to finish on the stovetop, and when we use coconut oil and Flavacol seasoning, we have hot, fresh, delicious theatre-style popcorn. I recommend this highly to anyone who loves popcorn and would like to spend less money on those gross microwave bags; the start up cost is a little high when you factor in the spinner here, the oil, the popcorn salt, and the seeds (I was about $35-$40 initially), but it lasts a long time and the overall cost is a small fraction of buying grocery store bags. We use 2 TBSP of oil, 1 TBSP of salt (in the cooker, though we sometimes add more after it’s cooked), and 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of seeds, and this ratio makes more popcorn than we can eat. (I would not recommend putting 1 cup of seeds in the cooker–it’s not big enough, and the popcorn on the bottom will either burn or sort of fuse together.)I have only a couple of notes about things I’m not super hot about:–The small holes in the top of the lid (where the hinges are) allow enough space for hot oil spatters. Not very much, but once or twice while making a batch I’ll feel it on my arm. It’s only a minor annoyance to me, but those with more sensitive skin might want to wear a long oven mitt to protect from this.–The gears that came on mine are plastic and becoming slightly discolored, which also does not affect the performance. It does make it look perpetually dirty.–The kettle is a little thin, too, so dropping it on the floor or banging it on the counter may dent it. Due to its thinness, it gets VERY HOT, not only while you’re applying stovetop heat, but while you’re emptying the corn. Recommend use of oven mitts, especially for children. The wooden handle is not hot, but the kettle could do some damage to little (or larger) fingers.–If you get it too full, you might have some issues getting the popcorn that’s crammed in the bottom to come out; we hold one side shut with an oven-mitted hand and dislodge the corn with a butter knife–just a small stir will help the rest come pouring out.We clean our spinner with paper towels normally, and occasionally by running all parts under the hot water tap, allowing to air dry, and then using paper towels again, and it’s perfect. You’ll want a big, big bowl if you use 1/2 or 3/4 cup of seeds (enough so that you can add seasonings and shake it around). We buy generic grocery-store seeds for about $1/lb and they work fine and taste great. I would not recommend children under eleven or twelve use this alone due to how hot it gets; they may injure themselves attempting to dump the kettle into bowls. I would also not recommend making kettle corn/adding sugar as it will clump in the bottom, but if you’re up to cleaning it, you can definitely do so. This would be a great gift, too.
Works great and easy to clean. I had a large popcorn maker cart which looked cool but ended up taking up too much space and it was hard to clean. This involves the same process and is way easier to clean. Tip: use a 1:1 popcorn to oil recipe. 1/3 cup fits perfectly when done.
Makes great popcorn and very easy to use. The Great Northern Popcorn machine makes terrific popcorn. It makes stovetop popcorn without burning any kernels. Popcorn made with oil in this manner tastes so much better than popcorn made in air and microware poppers.
works good so far, some people misunderstand the stirring. It worked great the first batch so far, will update this if it breaks down. Too many people here think the stirring thing is meant to stir the kernels, it isn’t, they hover above them and just stir the popped popcorn. Dont try to do more than 1/2 cup of white kernels like I did, as i noticed near the end it got stiff to stir and you dont want to stress the gearbox. When it gets stiff just stop stirring and give it a few more seconds to pop some more. I think 1/2 or slightly less of a cup is perfect with 2+ tablespoons of coconut oil, you dont need to stir until it starts popping which happens after the oil gets hot enough and starts sizzling/boiling and I kept the lid closed the whole time. I have a flat top electric range and I had it a smidge below medium heat. Mine came manufactured well, box came in good shape and its packed well in styrofoam in the box. Also, don’t use one of the heaters on the range that is slightly smaller than the size of the popper, use one of the big ones that is a bit larger than it. The part that touches the range is on the outer edge so you need 100% of that part touching direct heat.
Love it. I love this popper! Now I can eat healthy popcorn and it’s so easy to make. It arrived on time and was packaged very well. No problems.
Love popcorn, then this is for you. Nice and easy to use, and popcorn tastes great
Works Very Well. I really like how this popcorn popper works, it’s so much better than the air poppers that I’ve used in the past in that it does not make the popcorn taste like it’s stale. The only problem I have with it is it’s very thin metal, almost feels cheaply made, but I guess if I’m careful with it it should last a while.
Best method to pop popcorns. This stovetop popcorn maker is my preferred method of cooking popcorn now. I’ve had it for a few months, and it’s so easy to use. The 6-quart capacity is perfect for a party of 5-6 people. It’s also super easy to clean, which is a huge plus. The hand crank is a great feature, too. You can use it to stir the seasoning around or stir the popcorn while it’s popping so you don’t burn the popcorn at the bottom. The only downside I have is that it takes a while to master this art and it is not easy like microwaving bags of popcorn but I would highly recommend this product if you like to cock popcorn the old fashion way!
no more burning. works great. best popcorn and easy to use. wear a wrist high glove, there can be some tiny bit of oil splatter thru the lid holes. just be careful when using, don’t overfill. a little makes a lot
Exactly what I was looking for. Makes popcorn excellent like a champ, very light, easy clean up, design well, kernel pops very nice and even. If I ever need one I would get this one you get the best value for the money.
