As a holistic veterinarian and scientist, Dr. Gary Richter helps dog and cat owners to navigate the thicket of treatment options and separate the fact from the fiction. He wants us to use what actually works, not just what Western science or alternative medicine say "should" work. This multifaceted approach to health is known as integrative medicine.
Dr. Richter examines traditional medicine from many cultures alongside modern medical techniques, describing the best of complementary care and the best of conventional veterinary medicine. Every treatment he recommends has the backing of scientific research or years of successful outcomes in his clinical practice. After explaining the treatment, he offers specific recommendations for an integrative approach to common diseases, including allergies, skin conditions, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
A holistic approach to health includes nutrition, as it sets up the foundation for your pet’s health. Dr. Richter cuts through the hype in the pet-food world and explains how to choose the best commercial foods and supplements, and even includes both raw and cooked dog- and cat-food recipes for general diet as well as to treat specific needs. He also explains how we can use the right foods and supplements to "hack" the body’s processes, including the immune system.

This is a great book that brings together many alternative treatments for pets. This book brings together many alternative treatments for pets, with emphasis on the more common chronic diseases, including allergies, GI inflammation, arthritis and cancer, as well as others. It is particularly useful in that it provides very specific advice on how to use some of the treatments, when not to use them, and suggested dosages, all to be reviewed with your veterinarian. The model behind it…that traditional medicine, evidence based, medicine is outstanding at addressing acute diseases, but alternative and more ancient models of medicine has something to offer with chronic diseases, makes a great deal of sense. My one criticism is that the book would have been doubly useful if there were some attempt at assessing the efficacy of the different treatments. I know there’s nothing formal available for most of them, but at least a rough grouping into say 3 categories…(1) considered useful by many veterinarians; (2) controversial; (3) little evidence for usefulness would have been very helpful. I’d put chiropractic medicine and acupuncture in the first category; and homeopathic medicine in the third.
Good advice for Keeping a Healthy Pet. I have several books on dog and cat care and didn’t really need another book, but this particular book had much more information about little know things I could do to keep my furry family as healthy as possible in their senior years. For instance, I never knew I could crush up a multi vitamin and add it to my dogs food. I have 2 dogs, both over 70 pounds and over 13 years of age. I started to supplement their diet of grain free canned food, slightly seared raw meats and fish (I only cook the outside of the meats and leave the center raw so they will eat it) and noticed that along with their fish oil tablets, cosequin tablets and now the vitamins, my girls are still doing pretty well, when at the same time, I have 3 friends and family members who lost their dogs, who were also the same age, to cancers. I’m pretty happy overall with this veterinarian’s insight and experience he shares.
Excellent Recipes. There’s a lot of excellent information in this book for pet owners. The information on different diseases is very comprehensive. I particularly like the sections on nutrition and home-made recipes. Although it took a little bit of effort to locate and buy all of the supplements, I’m glad to know that the recipes I’m making for our 12 year old Miniature Pinscher are nutritionally sound. I wish there were more recipes and that substitutes were listed for some of the fresh ingredients. Also, I wish the recipe yield was also given in cups, in addition to grams (I can convert to ounces easily enough but cups is how most people feed their pets and that’s harder to do unless you make the entire recipe first and measure the number of cups you get).
Literally Brilliant!!!! Love. Thank you for writing this book Dr. Richter!!!! More than I hoped for. Perfect layman book to help navigate medical appointments with our veterinarian. This book goes over the ailments your dog and cat can have so you know what to expect from your vet and how best to approach each situation. I am really excited to try the recipes and learn what herbal remedies can help each of my dogs. This book lists what herbs, supplements and probiotics are best for each medical situation. Love this book!!! It’s going to help me be the best pet mom I can be. Very grateful to own such a book!!! (Yes it is a bit medical so if you are looking for something with less medical terminology you can ignore those parts and get straight to learning about the herbal and supplemental treatments towards the back. Worth every penny just to get the homemade recipes!!!)
I like this book on dog care. This book gives you suggestions for homemade dog foid
