  1. The original fascinating little book by Johnson and Smith was really useful, if dated as it was last revised in 1946. I was already on my second copy when I discovered this 2019 revised edition by A. P. Stockdale. I find the older version is easier to read, the font used is slightly larger, the print a stronger colour and each new entry is in bold whereas the new edition is a smaller font, the print is pale grey, new entries not in bold. Each entry starts with a plant name in italics. I know this follows accepted botanical procedure but being in bold was definitely easier to read. I did like the additional information about people for whom plants are named. Also, the inclusion of the family classification. There are a number of additional entries, Abelmoschus,Acmispon, Adelocaryum and Agalinis in the first few pages (I gave up on my original intention of going all the way through the two books to compare entries) but strange omissions. Why are Edgeworthia and Cercidiphyllum not included? I’m sure other plants are omitted but these I noticed. It is very difficult to keep up with the changes in plant names as science progresses and this book has entries for the modern names while keeping an entry for the original. For example, Ammogeton is now Agoseris. It might have been useful to have an entry under Agoseris to say “previously known as …” However, the revision of Johnson and Smith’s edition was a monumental task and I can only admire Mr Stockdale perseverance.A fascinating book for anyone interested in plants name, how to pronounce them and where the names come from. I think I’ll be using both books side by side.

  2. A must read for horticulturists everywhere

  3. Good price, quickly delivered.

  4. information exactly as I needed.

  5. The kindle version is not indexed. You can’t do a search. This makes the book totally useless. This is a reference book, not a novel.
